If you like your mysteries with a large helping of humor then Charlotte MacLeod is the author for you. Her characters are wonderfully eccentric and her settings are charming. I can't guarantee you will guffaw but you will definitely titter as you read her mysteries.

Ms. MacLeod was born on November 12, 1922 in Bath, New Brunswick, Canada. Though she resides in Maine, she pays tribute to her Canadian birthright in the mysteries she writes as Alisa Craig. Sadly, Ms. MacLeod suffers from Alzheimer's and has retired from the writing profession. In 1998, Malice Domestic recognized Ms. MacLeod with a lifetime achievement award.

Luckily for her fans, she has left a legacy of 32 adult mysteries. Under her own name, she has written ten Peter Shandy mysteries and twelve Sarah Kelling mysteries. As Alisa Craig, she has written five Madoc and Janet Rhys mysteries and five Grub-and-Stakers mysteries. She has edited three mystery collections. She has written a biography of Mary Roberts Rinehart.

The Peter Shandy series features agronomist Professor Peter Shandy and his librarian wife, Helen. The setting is Balaclava Agricultural College in a Maine-like setting. The secondary characters are unforgettable, especially the larger than life school president, Dr. Thorkjeld Svenson, and his Valkyrie wife, Sieglinde.

The first book, Rest You Merry, is one of the best Christmas mysteries written. The fifth book, The Curse of the Giant Hogweed is perfectly zany. The sixth book, The Corpse on Oozak's Pond is a Nero Wolfe award winner and an Edgar nominee. An Owl Too Many, eighth in the series, is an Agatha nominee.

The Sarah Kelling series features Sarah Kelling and her eccentric and quirky blue-blood Beacon Hill relatives.

The mysteries written under her Alisa Craig pseudonym are set in Canada. Madoc Rhys is a Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer. He and his wife, Janet, live in New Brunswick, Canada.

The Grub-and-Stakers series feature Dittany Henbit Monk and her husband, Osbert, a writer of westerns, and is set in Lobelia Falls, Ontario, Canada.

The majority of Ms. MacLeod's books are currently out of print. It is worth the trouble of locating them at a used bookstore or at your local library.

If you like Charlotte MacLeod, try Elizabeth Peters, Janet Evanovich, Dorothy Cannell, and Joan Hess.
