Elizabeth Peters & Barbara Michaels

Of the non-series books, all of which will seem a bit dated, my recommendations are Summer of the Dragon, Devil-May-Care, and Legend in Green Velvet.

Under the pseudonym of Barbara Michaels, she has written 29 gothic/romantic suspense novels. There is a supernatural aspect to each of the Barbara Michaels books. There are no series characters but some of the characters and houses crossover in a few books. Again, some of the books will seem dated but the more recent books are fantastic. The subjects have been well researched. Learn about vintage clothing in Stitches in Time, antique jewelry in Into the Darkness, political campaigns in Smoke and Mirrors, and roses in Vanish with the Rose.

Under her own name, Barbara Mertz, she has written two non-fiction books and co-authored one book:

• Temples, Tombs & Hieroglyphs: A Popular History of Ancient Egypt, copyright 1964, 1978, 1990
• Red Land, Black Land: Daily Life in Ancient Egypt, copyright 1966, 1978
• Two Thousand Years in Rome by Richard & Barbara Mertz, copyright 1968

If you like Elizabeth Peters, try Charlotte MacLeod's Peter Shandy series and Sarah Kelling series, Dorothy Cannell's Ellie Haskell series, Sharyn McCrumb's Elizabeth MacPherson series and James Owen Omega series, and Jane Langton's Homer Kelly series.

If you like Barbara Michaels, try authors Mary Stewart, Phyllis Whitney, and Dorothy Eden.
