Lizzie Borden

and this was the dress she had worn when she killed Abby and Andrew and that some blood had been on it. She later, almost under the very eyes of the police, burned a summer dress similar to that described, in the stove, because she says It had brown paint stains on it. No one actually saw the stains.

At the time of the murders, Lizzie was having her menstral period. Some blood was found on one of her petticoats, on the outside, rather than on the inside, where blood could easily stain an undergarment. Lizzie also had a history of some type of spells during her periods.

That the Bordens were killed by multiple hatchet blows to the head is proven. That Lizzie did it is almost proven. The front door had been bolted from the inside twice. Bridget had to knock or ring the bell when she needed more supplies for windo cleaning and when Andrew came home, his key would not unlock the front door because it had, again, been bolted from the inside and Lizzie had to unlock it to admit him.

When Lizzie was arrested, she was allowed, in her cell, such items as a lamp, meals from good resturants in town and such. The time that she spent in the jail, while not luxurious, was certainly not what the average ax murderer gets. She was treated like a princess.

The trial was a farce. Lizzie's inquest testimony, in which she contradicted herself three or four time as to where she was at the time of the murders, was not allowed in the trial. One of her trial lawyers was a former governor and was, to a large degree, the reason she was acquitted. That and the fact that the senior of three judges, when charging the jury, practicaly tells them to find her innocent. If there had been television in Lizzie's day, the judge could never have done that. And Lizzie was indeed acquitted.

There are several very interesting paralells between Lizzie Borden and OJ Simpson. All of the murders were done with a sharp device (hatchet or knife). Lizzie was,all in all, a rather boring person. Neither exhibited a great passion for finding the person who actually did it, if they didn't. And neither, although acquitted, really got away with it. Neither did jail time, but they did not get away with it. Lizzie lived out
