Books on Tape

A new phenomenon is taking the reading public by storm. It is the introduction to books on tape or CD. Since the introduction of MTV on cable, I have long said that I think that music should be an audio experience, not a visual one. But with the advent of audio books, I must temper my opinion because more and more reading is becoming an audio experience.

I love books on tape. I have purchased quite a few and after I have listened to them I have donated them to the local library. My first experience with audio books was when I took a three hour trip to southern central New York State to do some genealogical research.

On my way home I passed a mall and the thought occurred to me that I should stop and see if there was a book store and get a book on tape to entertain myself along the way. I was driving my husband's car and it had a tape player as did my van. Shortly thereafter we bought a new van which only had a CD player and there went my reading while I drove.

In January 1997 I had my first (and I hope only) major car accident. I had an interaction between two prescription medications and hit a tree. I totaled the van (my oldest daughter and I escaped with only minor injuries because our angels were with us that day). A week later I bought another van which had a tape player. Oh boy, I could read again while I was driving.

The local library where we lived at that time was very small and had few audio books. I increased their inventory by half. I could read while I drove, while I did jigsaw puzzles, while I did other crafts. This was really great because I usually have several books going at the same time and I could read while I was doing household chores, like the laundry.

When we moved to West Virginia, we bought a house between Charleston and Huntington. Both of those cities have big libraries and have many unabridged books on tapes. I started checking them out because I had to drive 30 minutes on the interstate to get to work. That gave me a full hour of reading time.

My husband cannot listen to books on tape while he drives. He has to concentrate on one thing at a time. He said that he had to keep rewinding the tape to listen again to the part he missed. Sometimes I have to do that too, but it doesn't bother me.
