Does God Make Monsters?

Because no-one knows for certain what cryptozoological / mysterious creatures are and where they come from, myriad debates rage about their actual origins and their purpose here on Earth.

Sasquatch, or "Big Foot", is something of a beloved cryptid, because it is typically gentle, and it reminds us of ourselves. Some people believe it is the "missing link", and if we can capture a Sasquatch for testing, we may find just how humans evolved from apes. But is Sasquatch a natural creature, or an abomination? What about ghosts, dragons, aliens, and other inhuman entities?

John Keel argues that all manner of mysterious creatures may actually be transdimensional travelers, sometimes purposefully placed in our way so that we may see them and realize we don't quite have it all figured out. Just when we think we know everything, a Mothman appears, we start hearing prophecies in our heads, and all hell breaks loose.

Mr. Keel wagers that mysterious creatures are put on Earth by the gods of old, the same playful entities that ancient man worshipped in temples, erected enormous (and seemingly pointless) stone monuments for, and from whom early man learned how to forge civilizations. So then, are paranormal beings the work of God?

The Bible is filled with references to strange creatures and to inexplicable supernatural events. The Old Testament writers took as fact the existence of angels, and in both the Old and New Testaments we see angels intervening in the lives of humans with surprising frequency.

Could not these angels be the same beings that the Egyptians perceived as their animal-headed gods, prompting (and perhaps instructing) ancient Egyptians to build awe-inspiring pyramids reaching to their heavenly home? Or could the angels not be the pantheon of Greco-Roman gods, watching over humanity from the lofty heights of Olympus? And could these angels be the UFOs we see streaking gloriously through our skies at night?

If Genesis is to be believed, God created everything on Earth and in the heavens. Angels and other supernatural beings referenced in the Bible are as much his children as we. So it stands to reason that Nessie, the Thunderbird, the Chupacabra, and other elusive oddities are also part of God's plan.

When a child is born with deformities, that child is still a creation of God. We say that God doesn't make mistakes-there is a reason for every handicap, and a purpose for every cross we're made to bear. I propose that there is a similar reason for every "monster" on Earth. And the aforementioned god-like entities who seem to pull their strings have their own mysterious reasons for letting us frightfully ignorant hominids interact with them. Even if that purpose is just to remind us that there are forces in the universe far beyond our comprehension.
