If you ever watch "Oprah," you are undoubtedly familiar with the show's "Angel Network," a program started to help low-income families build their own homes and send their kids to college. Oprah involved her viewers in the initial stages of the program by asking them to donate just their "spare change" to the cause. The results of this campaign were stunning as literally millions of dollars poured in from around the country. Even little children gave up their pocket change to help. Still going strong, the Angel Network has become bigger than anyone ever dreamed possible as corporations and big-time celebrities have also begun to contribute their time and money to this unique program.
As Muslims, we can learn something important from what Oprah has accomplished in a very short period of time: namely, that every contribution counts and that no effort is insignificant. For Muslim women interested in starting money-making projects in their own communities, the Angel Network serves as an example of the results that a little enthusiasm and dedication can produce. Add faith to that equation and we should realize very quickly that no goal is out of our reach so long as Allah Most High has the will for us to achieve it. For various reasons, it is not uncommon to find that many of our brothers and sisters in faith are living paycheck to paycheck and that they are very much in need. We should understand that being in need does not necessarily mean that one is starving, homeless or unemployed; being in need could encompass many things including a persistent difficulty in making ends meet, the inability to afford necessary medical treatment, living in crime-ridden areas and the challenges that come with single parenthood, especially for women who must work and leave their children in the care of others. All of these problems and many more are facing Muslims in North America, and it is time that we begin taking steps to solve them. Pooling together our money, efforts and other resources in an organized manner is an obvious first step which simply needs planning and commitment.
I encourage Muslim women to form women's groups in their areas and to hold regular meetings in order to identify what kinds of projects they may be interested in starting for the benefit of themselves as well as the larger community. Once you have defined some goals, an easy way to raise money would be to ask members and others to make regular donations of their spare change at the minimum, and to contribute more if they are able.
