HOLLYWOOD ARMS: Burnett on Broadway

Carol Burnett’s name is likely known to most due to her incredibly popular variety-style television show which ran on CBS for over a decade (1967 – 1978). This October, Broadway audiences will be treated to a new play, “Hollywood Arms”, co-written by Burnett and her deceased daughter, Carrie Hamilton.

As a performer, Burnett has appeared on stage, on television and on the big screen. Motion pictures include, “The Four Seasons” playing Alan Alda’s wife/”Annie” playing Miss Hannigan and several ‘made-for-t.v.’ movies including, “The Marriage Fool” and “Seasons of the Heart”.

Burnett was a featured character on the NBC series, “Mad About You” (Jamie’s Mom) and has made numerous guest appearances on everything from specials with Dolly Parton, Julie Andrews and Beverly Sills. It was television that introduced a young Carol Burnett to the world in 1950 when she appeared on “The Paul Winchell and Jerry Mahoney Show”. Soon, (1958), she became a regular on “The Garry Moore Show” and her career was launched.

“Hollywood Arms”, however, is not another notch in Carol Burnett’s performing career. This time, in collaboration with daughter, Carrie Hamilton, Burnett has penned a play based on her memoir, One More Time – published in 1986 by Random House. Directed by Harold Prince (winner of numerous Tony’s), “Hollywood Arms” stars Linda Lavin (t.v.’s Alice/Broadway’s “Tale of the Allergist’s Wife” playing Marjorie), Michele Pawk (“Seussical”, “Chicago”, “Cabaret”, “Crazy for You”) and Frank Wood (“Side Man” – 1999 Tony award winner/many off-Broadway credits).

Following the story of a young girl whose apartment rooftop becomes her escape into the wonderful world of entertainment. The play is set in Hollywood Hills around the time of World War II and includes the characters of HELEN (the young girl),NANNY, (the woman who raises the girl after her parents’ divorce), LOUISE, (the child’s mother who wound up on welfare), JODY, (the alcoholic father).

April 2002 saw the premiere of Burnett’s play at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago. Soon, Broadway will present it’s version of “Hollywood Arms” with previews October 7th – 30th and opening night on October 31st. Performances will take place at Broadway’s Cort Theatre.

Ticket prices range from $20.00-$75.00 during previews and $20.00-$80.00 beginning opening night. Those interested in ordering tickets for this much-awaited show will find numerous sites online such as:

ON A PERSONAL NOTE: Carrie Hamilton

Carrie Hamilton, Carol Burnett’s eldest daughter, died of cancer in January of 2002. She continued to collaborate with her mother on all aspects of their project until her death. Burnett is grateful for the chance to have worked with her daughter on such a worthwhile project.
