Can’t get to the theatre? Don’t live in New York? With the advances in today’s technology, you can now purchase a video or DVD of live, recorded Broadway musicals just as the audience saw them.

Don’t want to purchase the show but still wish you could see it? Well, then the alternative is the cable/pay-per-view channel BROADWAY TELEVISION NETWORK. Imagine being able to go to the theatre any night of the week without ever having to leave the house.

Whether it’s a newer musical like “Jekyll and Hyde” or the longest running musical in Broadway’s history, “Cats”, there’s always something for everyone. Stephen Sondheim fans who missed the short run of his review, “Putting it together: a musical review” are now able to bring the music of their favorite composer into their own living room.

Okay, now I can hear all you patrons of live theatre starting to mumble under your breath. “Nothing compares to seeing a show live!”

Well, you’re absolutely right…without a doubt! The magic of the musicals includes the rush one gets from the energy of the production numbers to the silence where you can hear a pin drop during an emotionally charged climactic scene. And the experience is never the same twice!

The whole pretext of going to the theatre including donning our “theatre” clothes, walking through the hustle and bustle of the brightly-lit theatre district and going out for a late supper after the show all add to the spectacle of the theatre experience. This part of the experience, sadly, just cannot compare to sitting in your arm chair in your favorite slippers and munching on a bowl of popcorn while watching the show.

But…if you’re a real lover of musical theatre…it’s better than not getting to go to see the show at all!

I’ll give you an example:

I have seen “Cats” by Andrew Lloyd Webber three times. Once, when it opened in Toronto, Ontario Canada; once in London England (my least favorite one I might add) and once when the touring company planned a show in my city. Each time, I found new wonders, felt new emotions and generally had a wonderful time.

Why?

Because I LOVE going to the theatre, I enjoy the music of Andrew Lloyd Webber and the choreography was incredible. For all around appeal, I can see why “Cats” merits the title of longest running musical. It appeals to families with kids, singers, dancers, fans of T.S.Elliot and those who just love the musical theatre genre.
