No doubt, if you’re a performing arts fan, you recognize the following names:
Bob Fosse Andrew Lloyd Webber Gregory Hines Mickey Rooney They are, without a doubt, legends in their profession. Many are especially known for a specific discipline, while others continue to display their multi-talented wares. Yet, this elite group represents only a tiny percentage of the GREAT talents found in musical theatre today. Tommy Tune: dancer/singer/actor/choreographer/director is one of musical theatre’s brightest stars who has been a permanent fixture on the Broadway stage since his debut performances in the chorus as early as 1965. Born in Texas, Tommy Tune began his dance training at an early age studying ballet, tap and acrobatics at the age of five. His love of the arts continued into his college days as he pursued a degree in drama in his home state. Although a fine actor, it was not Hollywood that called to this young talent, but rather, the bright lights of Broadway…and it has paid off. The recipient of an incredible purse of awards and accolades, his trophies include: Total of Nine Tony Awards: Best featured actor: 1 Drama Desk Awards: 8 Obie Awards: 2 Numerous other awards including: Dance Magazine’s award for lifetime achievement Tommy Tune has appeared in scores of productions both on and off Broadway; most recently returning to the stage in “Tommy Tune Tonight”, his one man show which also toured internationally. He has directed the likes of “Nine” and “Grand Hotel” and has choreographed such shows as “My One and Only” and “The Will Rogers Follies” for which he received Tony’s for best choreography in a musical. He has appeared in movies with the likes of Barbra Steisand (“Hello Dolly”) and Twiggy (“The Boyfriend”) as well as on television with figure skater Kurt Browning. Tune even garnered the job of assistant choreographer on “The Dean Martin Show”. So what will Tommy Tune do next? Well, he’s already done that: a recording of ballads for the CD “Slow Dancin’” and a book, with author Frances Johnson, on the many aspects of the theatre profession titled, “Learn it from the Master”. Tommy Tune has thrived in the theatre because of his awesome and diverse talents, his creativity, his drive and determination and his love of his art. He is the only person to have won Tony’s in four different categories and continues to push the envelope as he elicits new projects and develops new ideas. Go To Page: 1 2
