This week I’d like to focus on those of my readers who are interested in the writing and performing
aspects of musical theatre. Whether you’re just thinking about becoming involved in this wonderful genre or you’ve already experienced it first hand, it is always beneficial to encounter others who share this interest.
The world wide web has become an invaluable tool for research as well as a wonderful place to seek out those with similar interests, however, with the numbers of websites, ezines, listserves and the like growing in astronomical numbers each year, finding what you’re looking for can also be a frustrating experience. The easiest way to get started is to search for your particular needs right here at suite101.com. Our site contains many topics pertaining to writing/playwriting/musical theatre/acting/community theatre and so much more. Just type in what you’re looking for in our “search” box and you’re on your way. Now, let’s address those interested in the craft of writing. If you’ve ever done a search on Google or Yahoo, you will be inundated with more choices than you can really handle. So where are some of the best places to learn about the craft of playwriting and writing musicals? Where can one go to find information on anything from proper manuscript format to publishers to theatres looking for new material for upcoming productions? These links will certainly get you started: http://www.geocities.com/musicalmakers http://groups.yahoo.com/group/broadway http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Broadwayta... http://www.forwriters.com/groups.html http://www.scriptwritingsecrets.com/cont... http://www.brainlink.com/~cjeffer/script... http://www.vcu.edu/artweb/playwriting/fo... They contain information about writing for the theatre, writers groups and proper script formatting information. If you have that idea kicking around but just haven’t gotten it down on paper yet, these sites can certainly get you moving in the right direction. There are also a lot of general writing sites that cover everything from writing articles, fiction, plays, genre writing and so much more. Some of my favorite haunts include: http://www.coffeehouseforwriters.com http://www.freelancewriting.com http://www.writingfordollars.com See what I mean? These are just some of my favorites and the list is already quite extensive. Listserves also provide everyone from the aspiring writer to the published professional a forum for discussions, knowledge sharing and making contacts. What is a Listserve? It’s a group of people all interested in the same topic of discussion. Participants must sign up to join the group. Then, after selecting either “digest” (which I recommend) or “individual emails” (expect an over full inbox), you begin to receive email messages with subjects pertaining to the general interest topic of the group. What are the benefits of belonging to a Listserve? 1. To meet and exchange ideas with fellow writers/playwrights/composers/singers Go To Page: 1 2
