“They say the neon lights are bright on Broadway” is the famous first line from the well-known song, “On Broadway”. And the 2001-2002 theatre scene offers some very bright lights for audiences of all ages and all interests. The love of dance is celebrated in the likes of “Stomp”, “Riverdance”, and “42nd Street”. Children and families can enjoy “Beauty and the Beast” and “The Lion King” as well as classics like, “The Music Man”. And if you’re looking for something quite a bit different, there’s “Bat Boy” (off Broadway) and “Urinetown”. But we all know how time consuming searching the world wide web can be. Any search engine will deliver hundreds of thousands of sites if one uses search terms like, “musicals”, “Broadway”, “theatre”, etc. Well at suite101’s PERFORMING AND WRITING MUSICAL THEATRE site, we want to keep you informed so we’ve done all the research. Annie Get Your Gun: The revival musical of this popular favorite about one of the west’s toughest gals, Annie Oakley. The story revolves around a half boy/half bat who is placed with a family where he becomes a “normal” boy. Or does he? Music by Alan Menken. Blast: Already airing on PBS, this high energy, rhythmic performance show features a 60 member cast. Born out of the musical energy of the outdoor marching drum corps, this show is not to be missed. You may have seen them on television commercials or on “Live” with Regis.
