Aside from the original dance musicals written for the stage, two musicals currently playing are stage adaptations of famous dance movies. "Footloose",(http://www.Footlooselive.com), based on the hit movie of the same name is a high energy musical currently playing at the Richard Rodgers Theatre. It contains new music by Mark Snow plus several songs from the movie. And who didn't love the 1977 John Travolta dance movie," Saturday Night Fever"? (http://www.FeveronBroadway.com). The stage version of "Saturday Night Fever" contains the Bee Gee's movie songs plus 2 new ones they have written just for this stage production. Besides the revivals, the dance extravaganza's and the stage versions of movie musicals, New York still offers its theatre goers "Cats", "Les Miserables",(http://www.lesmis.com)," Jekyll & Hyde",(http://www.jeykll-hyde.com),"Miss Saigon","Beauty and the Beast", "Rent" (http://www.SiteForRent.com) and the "Lion King"; some of the 1990's hottest offerings. Then there are the newest musicals to hit the Broadway scene as recently as this April. "The Wild Party",(http://www.thewildparty.com) now playing at the Virginia Theatre, is set in the 1920's at an all night party where desperation is mistaken for love and too much to drink changes some peoples' lives forever. "Aida", the musical based on the same legend as Verdi's opera of the same name, pairs Elton John & Tim Rice together again. (Both wrote the score for the Lion King). Off Broadway sees "Postcards on Parade" opening April 27th, 2000 at the York Theatre. Steven Taylor's music rounds out the fantasies of a lonely postcard collector who creates a musical journey where postcards come to life. As we begin the 21st century, musical theatre seems to be trying to feature something for everyone. Those looking for something new and completely different can find it in many of the new shows but the traditionalists can still sit back and re-live their favorite musicals again and again. The day of the great song and dance movies are long gone but musical theatre lives on, going strong, in the year 2000.
