SUBBING OUT YOUR SCRIPTS

How does one break into the musical theatre/stageplay biz as a writer or composer? I get asked that all the time, often by eager dreamers who are writing that big Broadway musical.

What do I tell them?

In a nutshell, that they have to look for more realistic opportunities such as contests, amateur theatre companies looking for new material and places that workshop new pieces.

This month, I've decided to post some links to get you motivated to finish that play or musical and start seeing your work jump off the page to the stage...

***Remember when entering a contest, always read the guidelines carefully and follow them to the letter. Contests and theatres get inundated with submissions, often very badly written ones at that, and your chances of having someone actually read your work increases if you submit your script professionally and adhering to the guidelines.

Probably one of the most well-known contests is the annual competition through WRITERS DIGEST. They have 10 categories in which to enter, including a category for the stage play script.

1. Children's Fiction

2. Feature Article

3. Genre Short Story

4. Inspirational

5. Mainstream/Literary Short Story

6. Nonrhyming Poem

7. Memoirs/Personal Essay

8. Rhyming Poem

9. Stage Play Script

10. Television/Movie Script
