Last month, my featured article was all about the New York Musical Theatre festival (NYMF), running until October 3, 2004. This festival gives artists, composers, writers, directors and performers a chance to present new works in a nurturing environment and to showcase promising new talents. The New York Musical Theatre Festival is being compared to the Sundance film festival (celebrating diversity, creativity and future), for it's impact on the musical theatre genre and the opportunities that it presents to its participants.

For more information on this amazing celebration of musical theatre, check out their website at http://www.nymf.org

Many new works will debut at this event, one of them being FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD, at the 47th St. theatre. Chosen from the 245 new works submitted, FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD is one of 31 shows to be presented during this year's festival.

FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD is based on Thomas Hardy's classic novel set in 19 century England. It is a love story mixed with elements of murder, betrayal and intrigue. The libretto and lyrics were written by Barbara Campbell, who also writes fiction and musicals for kids. The musical score comes to the show courtesy of Gary Schocker, http://www.garyshocker.com ,an internationally acclaimed flutist and composer.

Jamibeth Margolis, the director for this project, specializes in the development of new musical works.

Musical director, Tom Gallaher, was recently in the national tour and Broadway company of Chicago. Choreographer, James Darrah, is set to star in a world premier of the musical WAS.
