New York's musical theatre celebration, the NY Musical Theatre Festival will feature
concerts, premieres, performers and plenty of music. The festival is dedicated to discovering new works and promoting the ongoing success of musical theatre.
Scheduled from September 13 to October 3, this year's festival will feature new works by Stephen Swartz and Kander and Ebb to name a few. But don't just expect plenty of live theatre. There will also be screenings of movie musicals, musical t.v. series and the first Midtown Cabaret Festival. And don't forget to check out the 'improvised musicals' in the Freestyle NYMF series for something different. Many projects, partnered by such well-known organizations as ASCAP, BMI, The American Theatre Wing, the Dramatist's Guild, Theatre Lab and so many more will also occur during this festival. It's a jam packed 21 days filled with everything musical theatre. Some of the musicals to appear will include: FRANKENSTEIN...DO YOU DREAM THE BIG VOICE - GOD OR MERMAN DRIFT THE CHROMIUM HOOK THE HAPPY PRINCE THE TAXI CABARET EMMA THE FLUTE PLAYER'S SONG THE MAN WHO WOULD BE KING TIM AND SCROOGE CAPTAIN LOUIE SKIN OF OUR TEETH HOUDINI and so many more. Maybe one of the most intriguing aspects of the NYMF is its improvised Broadway musical series. Audiences will participate in helping to create a musical by suggesting song titles and ideas for the performers, who will then create a musical right before their eyes. One such group, Freestyle Rep, http://www.freestylerep.org, will be creating and performing their improvised musical on Sept. 30 and Oct. 2 at The 45th street theatre - Primary Stages. CAPTAIN LOUIE is the new Stephen Swartz musical based on the children's musical, "The Trip". Swartz is known for creating the songs for musicals such as "Pocohontas", "The Hunchback of Notre Dame", "Godspell" and many more. Performances will take place Oct. 1 and 2. SKIN OF OUR TEETH is the new Kander and Ebb musical, playing at the 47th Street Theatre - The Puerto Rican Travelling Theatre on Sept. 26th. Kander and Ebb are Broadway legends who music has graced the stage in such productions as "Cabaret", "Kiss of the Spider Woman" and "Chicago". With the phenomenal success of "Jekyll and Hyde", this year's festival features a new musical from Canada, FRANKENSTEIN...DO YOU DREAM, playing at the Belt theatre. Book, music and lyrics, are all written by Robert Asselstine. The Movie Musical Screening series will take place Sept. 27-30 and feature shorts, dance features, music videos and new musical features. All movie screenings will be at AMC Theatres Empire 25, 234 W. 42nd street. Go To Page: 1 2
