The Do's and Don'ts of going to the Theatre

Don't:

Get up in the middle of someone's solo. If you must get up before an act is over, try to plan it during an appropriate break in the action (like a scene change) so as to make as little a disruption as possible.

Don't:

Take flash pictures or try to videotape a professional production. Most theatres have strict rules regarding this. Flash pictures are very distracting. You may be asked to leave if you are caught videotaping. These performances are copywritten. Ask if there is a professional video of the show if you wish to have a copy for your home video collection. Always make sure you know the theatre's policy on pictures and videotaping before entering the theatre.

It is likely that you can wait around after the performance and get some cast pictures - maybe even have one of the staff take a picture of you with the cast.

Don't:

Bring food to the theatre. Intermission is the time to get a snack or a drink and these items must be consumed in the appropriate areas.

Don't:

Make unnecessary noise - like unwrapping candies or digging through your purse for something - during the performance. Wait for an appropriate break!

Most of this "etiquette" is also relevant at recitals (dance recitals, piano recitals, school pageants, talent shows) with one exception:

Many teachers will allow videotaping at these events and also, some teachers do allow snapshots during performances.

Always take in consideration how your conduct may affect those in the audience and those on stage. Use your own discretion and you will find that whether you're sitting in the audience or up on the stage yourself, live performances are a wonderful way to spend your time.
