Can you make it as a performer?

What does it take to make it in the performing arts?

DEDICATION, DETERMINATION, DRIVE AND DESIRE

I'm often asked by adults and children alike, "How can I make it in musical theatre?" or "How can I become a professional singer...dancer...actor...etc?"

I wish there was a simple answer to that question - a magic key to the kingdom, if you will.

The first thing I say to those who convince me that they are serious about pursuing a career in some aspect of the performing arts is this:

"HOW BADLY DO YOU WANT IT?"

I believe that if one is to have any success obtaining a career, be it the arts or any highly competitive and subjective vocation, the DESIRE must be that of a passion. Many think that the fame and monetary compensation of the entertainment biz is what they want to achieve. For most performers, that elite group whose fame and recognition propel them to stardom, is a fantasy.

If you truly desire to be up on that stage and you are most fulfilled and complete when you are performing, then that convinces me that you just might have a shot at making it.

Of course, talent and training go without saying. Many aspire to perform but you must have the goods to back up your decision. If you haven't studied your craft and paid your dues in practicing and taking instruction, this is the first place to start.

DRIVE is doing whatever it takes to get that much closer to your goal...doing it even when it is not convenient or fun.

*** Like going to dance class even when you have a cold and don't really have the physical energy.

*** Like practicing your singing when you'd rather be watching television

***Like spending a weekend at a workshop instead of at a friend's

And the list goes on and on.

DRIVE is necessary for you to gather the ammunition you need to at least give you a shot at your ultimate goal...a career in the performing arts.

DEDICATION means putting your goal ahead of other things that can get in the way. If you enjoy singing or dancing or acting as a hobby, then get involved in community theatre or join a choir and have a wonderful time. Make sure you don't confuse enjoying the activity with actually wanting to pursue this for the rest of your life. There are many people who participate in many different aspects of the performing arts on an extra-curricular basis and for them, that is fulfilling.
