If you're a fan of the theatre, the beginning of June is an exciting
time as you anxiously await the annual television broadcast of the Tony
Awards. The Tonys celebrate the best in live theatre's plays and
musicals. Always a star-studded t.v. event, the Tonys also boast
musical numbers from each year's nominated musicals.
This year the Tony awards will air Sunday, June 8th on CBS at 8:00 but for the first time ever, the broadcast has been expanded to 3 hours (from its regular 2 hour time slot). And what does that mean for theatre lovers? More stars...more performances...more gala! Several musical numbers are scheduled for this year's telecast including: Bernadette Peters (Gypsy) Harvey Fierstein/Marissa Jaret Winokur & co. (Hairspray) Mark Linn-Baker/Jay Goede (A Year with Frog and Toad) Antonio Banderas/Jane Krakowski/Chita Rivera/Mary Stuart Masterson (Nine the musical) Brian Stokes Mitchell/Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio/Ernie Sabella (Man of La Mancha) and the companies of La Boheme and Def Poetry Jam are among those scheduled to appear. Hosted by Hugh Jackman, and including appearances by Billy Joel, Melanie Griffith, Rosie Perez, Benjamin Bratt, Marisa Tomei, Sarah Jessica Parker, Matthew Broderick, Barbara Walters and a slew of others, this year's Tony broadcast is definitely not one to be missed.
