UNLOAD A FEW DEMOS
Hey, self-promotion is what it's all about sometimes in music. Clear out some of those demos you have just sitting around, especially some old ones you don't have the heart to erase, and send them off to folks as a present. They can always tape over it if they like. I've even used some of my old unused promo color handbills as part of a card before--hey, you can deduct it from your taxes once you hand it out--it doesn't matter who it is to, so by clearing out your old stuff, you are actually saving up for next year's taxes at the same time.
UNLOAD SOME OLD EQUIPMENT
Sometimes your stuff just isn't worth much, especially if it is old. If you have already done as much deducting as you can for your Form C, why not just give an old item you aren't using away and count it as sold? Just pay the taxes on what you are claiming as income from the "sale" of the item, and give it to some needy member of your family that might need a good beginner instrument, a slow computer, or whatever. You might also find a needy charity that could use your stuff, too, and take a tax deduction that way. In both these ways you give to others as well as yourself. If you try taking your stuff to a pawn shop or music store, you might be shocked at how little it is worth on the wholesale market, but if you can, find the going rate for your goods for retail and run an ad in the local music paper or on some bulletin boards if you have a little time, and get what you can for it to pay for some Christmas goodies and beef up your bottom line musically before year's end. Don't forget to try online, too--I had the worst time just getting on to Ebay last night--it is hopping, and that might be a good place to try to sell at least some smaller items, but I've seen a coworker get rid of his bass guitars that way. Keep your options open, and try what you can--chances are, you can easily scare up a little extra cash and make someone's holidays happier at the same time.
