Songs Of The Bored

SONGS OF THE BORED

Hey, there's another topic a lot of musicians can relate to! Why not write songs about being completely bored out of your head? It's not like it hasn't been done, and you are right there and experiencing the emotion, so you should be able to come up with some great content and have so much left over you have several verses to choose from, and then can write sequels. Here are a few ideas to guide you on how to go about pulling this one off effectively.

GET THE FEELING ACROSS

As always, use your basic writing prompt of going through what you are sensing at this moment of total boredom. What does your boredom smell like? What tastes make you bored that you'd like to avoid right now? What textures bore you? What sights are boring to you? What sounds, or even songs bore you to tears? What does it do to you, body-wise? What is it doing to you physically as far as how you feel inside, as in heartbeat, keeping eyes open of course, fidgeting and the like? Get dirty about it-let us know how irritated it makes you and why it is causing you this frustration. If at all possible, make it really personal-let the audience feel what you are feeling by using really down-to-earth word pictures that will put them right where you are and experiencing this first-hand. Make us wish we could leave. Musically, I've heard composers use really slow music you just are wanting to spin faster, incredibly aggravating, repetitive sections you just want to bang the CD player to skip to something better, but change it just before they do, or you can cause your own song's demise! Better yet, you can just make it something you find really boring-perhaps a musical style that when you are faced with it just have a need to channel surf or you feel you will go to sleep. Then perhaps you can change up your style and voice in the chorus or even the bridge or end of the song about what escape would be to you, so the listener has something to help solve their own sleepy afternoon.

CHANGE THE FOCUS

It can also be fun to write a song about someone else being bored. If you have ever babysat children, you know what a challenge it can be to get them interested in anything. Another fun approach would be having someone you didn't want to be bored getting totally bored with you, say a significant other. You can even write a song about trying to get an animal's attention, and what you had to do to get it to decide you were pretty okay for a human, say a family dog or cat, a horse you were picking out, or a wild animal you were trying to lure to your feeder or take a picture of while on vacation. Perhaps it can even be about a nightmare gig where your audience was bored, and all the contortions you went through to win them over. You can even make it more fun by having the accompanying music show your frustration with your intended group, or exaggerating something they say or do in musical notes as they mock you, and then maybe even exaggerate back when you do things their way, by using the stuff that does attract them as background when you get them where you want them.
