Healing The Hurts

HEALING THE HURTS

Well, maybe things are a little rough for you now as a songwriter. Sure, you can just grind out lyric after lyric or pound out the loudest notes you can muster to try to desensitize yourself to the hurt, and that's good, too, but there are some things that can really help after you didn't make that final cut on the album, the tour, or to be in that cool new band. Please feel free to try these at home, at work, or wherever you can fit them in.

FIND JOY WHERE YOU CAN

Strangely, laughing can be one of the best healers when you aren't happy with yourself. If you have a favorite book series that made your sides ache in the past, perhaps now is a good time to reread it. See if there is a good comedy on television or if you can swing the cost, go out and rent a movie for the evening that you know will bring a few smiles. Go find some fun relatives to be around, especially if they have kids or pets you like, and spend some time just getting involved in what they are up to of late. The important thing is to just immerse yourself in something that is totally fun for you that you need to give your attention to to keep you from thinking about your own recent events. Most of us know that you never really forget something that happened if it was important, but with lots of other good memories, it loses its significance and thus the hurt it causes us. They say that success is always the best revenge-get yours by refusing to let this tragedy get to you in any real way so you can keep on striving for your goals.

PAMPER YOURSELF

Letting yourself know you are loved is very important after a big owie like you just had. What things can you do that are good for you for yourself right now? For many of us, a nice long soaky bath or even a laze around the pool or at the beach can soothe away a lot, but if you do decide to go outside, perhaps try either a lot of sunscreen or sit in the shade-a nasty sunburn is the last thing you need right now. Maybe take a little day trip somewhere on your day off-nowhere expensive, especially if you are having financial problems on top of everything else, but maybe a trip to a nearby nature area if you are the outdoorsy sort. Maybe a trip to the mall if you like to people watch, but only allowing yourself to get a snack or maybe something you really need, but take your time shopping for that item just to get the walking exercise in and the fun of shopping without the expense. Why not do something you haven't in a while, like finding a place that rents canoes or horses by the hour so you can just go out and get out on trails or water and feel that connection to nature or a horse and get your attention on something that will again, totally take up your attention in a vibrant way for a time. Maybe go to the local licensing place and get your fishing license and untangle your old rod and reel and see if you can bring home a fresh dinner? For that matter, why not take a trip to the grocery store, and get the ingredients for that really cool recipe your pal gave you that is just begging for you to try it out? Invite some friends along to do these things if you would rather be with others, and chances are, you will have a great time, in spite of how you might have felt before you started.
