THE MIRACULOUS
Religious experiences are always fun to write songs about. Sure, you can use the usual cliché sounds of harps, thunderclaps or crackling fire from a bush when your character hears a guiding voice or something wild happens, but don't limit yourself to that-try to make it personal. Think of stories you have heard where someone's life was spared, when they didn't go somewhere when a tragedy occurred, when your team was down by a huge margin but pulled the game out anyway, or when someone met the person of their dreams, and somehow everything worked out with a happy ending when it looked like there was no way that would happen. Have fun putting an odd twist on it, like the time a housewife pulled a car off the family dog and it lived. How about a song where everyone hid in the bathtub and the tornado took out everything but them? Why not make the music sound like the event, instead of the usual uplifting-sounding typical ballad, and see if you can do it without the sweeping strings or plaintive guitar solo? Have fun with this, and think of telling the story convincingly, not just going for the heartstrings.
UFOS
There have been loads of humorous and serious songs written on this subject you can look at to get a few ideas. Now be tough on yourself, and refuse to be like any of these. I still think it could be fun to hear a country tune about the Marfa Lights, or a conversation with someone who claimed they got abducted, and the listener putting in asides about how they weren't quite convinced and why. You could do one as if you were abducted yourself, or one where, as some classic rock acts have done-where you got to go on that ship to take the "chosen" away before the Earth gets creamed, ala "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy," or some folks' interpretation of the Bible's book of Revelations.
THE PARANORMAL
This can always be a fun area to write about. Thinking of what it would be like to read everyone's mind for a day, or what fun it could be to live in a haunted house are two ideas. There have been many good songs written about odd creatures of the night, people who weren't what they appeared to be, but instead were monsters or ghosts who just dropped in for a visit. A song about a "reading" done on someone that didn't come true could have some great plot twists, and in some ways more fun than a song where it did come about. Again, the music can be the usual trite stuff you hear with this sort of song, but try breaking out of that mold and coming up with your own idea of what a haunted barn sounds like, not just the usual squeaky doors and moans-it can make for some really fun sound effects and adlibbed lyrics, and maybe make the song as memorable as your words would.
