WHOSE WAS IT?
Who is having this dream? Sure, it's great to write about your own fantasies, but it doesn't have to be you singing about them. Why not have a fictional friend tell you about their sleep disturbance of last night, or even have your spouse tell you they had you "visit" them during sleep recently. Make sure you are clear about just who is having the dream, too, especially if someone is relating it to someone else-those pesky pronouns can really make things confusing to your listener if you aren't careful.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Sometimes we can't remember our dreams, but we know we had one. Remember how you felt trying to recall the exact events, but if you couldn't, sometimes saying that you weren't able to, or woke up can be just as believable. You can easily concoct a dream from dream interpretation sites that explain basic symbols if you want to get a certain message across. If you want to be really revealing, you can simply recount one that you actually had, but it might be a good idea to run the idea across to someone who understands dream theory before you make it public, just in case it is something you'd find embarrassing once interpreted. Try to make it as personal as possible so it has vivid images, even if those images are misty in your thoughts. It can also be fun to write a lyric about sleeping with someone who talked in their sleep, and talking to them the next morning about who they were thinking about just to see if they even remember the incident. I thought it was hilarious asking a roomie if they would like food from a certain restaurant since the name kept coming up in the previous night's ramblings, and that person admitted it was actually another restaurant they had the dream about-wild! So feel free to put in an odd twist to it if you like-chances are, even if you make it all up, it probably has already happened to someone, somewhere. Even if you suddenly become a superhero and fly around saving people, try to make it even more personal by describing the way it felt to fly, the color of your cape and tights if you have colored dreams instead of monochrome ones, whether you were high up or low, and what you could see while you were up there. Take us as much into your world as you can, not just give us a dreamy half-remembered report, although that can be a nice lyric idea, too.
