Music Is Everywhere

MUSIC IS EVERYWHERE

The places where you can market your music are really limitless. Once you find these markets, it is often just a matter of figuring out what sorts of music they are looking for. Here are a few suggestions you might not have thought of just yet.

SOFTWARE COMPANIES

Sure, there are in-house composers for some companies, but many actually farm out music writing duties. Right now, I am cleaning my computer laser lens with a cleaning disc, and it has music on it to help you test your sound system after you clean it. Many gaming companies need background music, too-try doing a web search to find some and see if any of them use outside songwriters. Many local webmasters might also appreciate some outside compositions, since they might have plenty of work just keeping up with the software part of their web duties.

LOCAL BUSINESSES

Don't forget to try contacting some companies in your area, too, and see if they could use some music to spiff up their websites or presentations-you might be pleasantly surprised to get some regular freelance work. Larger companies often have conferences and meetings, and might welcome some little song snippets to liven up those boardroom gatherings, especially if you offer them in large amounts on CDs that they can just choose from, or allow you to work with them and plan out song bites to go with their video parts.

DEPARTMENT STORES

MUSAK isn't the only company that does music for stores. Many offer their own house music, and might welcome some long, non-repeating CDs of soothing music or whatever might best suit their clientele. Some like to play music from local musicians, too, so you might even try to get some of your fellow song pals to join you in the project, and perhaps make it a regular item that the stores can advertise that they do for their local music scene. You might see what their policy is for holidays and special events, too-you might find that they could use at least some backup musicians during Christmas to play carols, and most of us could use a few extra dollars that time of year as it is. It doesn't hurt to ask.

RESTAURANTS

Music clubs aren't the only places where you can hear music while you eat. Many nicer restaurants like to have at least soft background tunes running for their patrons, so why not make them some of yours? If you know how to play music from other countries, too, you might try some with foreign foods, and see if they might like some tunes that are theme appropriate for their venue. Some might just like some updates of some classics, but if that means some performance dollars, it is still music practice, and might get some of your originals heard along the way. You might even get some good meals as barter, and this could be a great way to impress someone you hope will pick up some of your tunes by taking them there for a meal, too.
