How To Avoid Irritations

TRY TO SCHEDULE THINGS WHEN POSSIBLE

Sometimes the best time to write is when you KNOW things will be the best they possibly can. If you KNOW your noisy neighbors finally go to sleep by 3am, and so is the fussy spouse and children, perhaps getting them all happily off to sleep then getting up to work quietly is your best strategy if quiet works best for you. I find I get pretty fired up when the local high school marching band gets practicing mid-mornings during football season, and the hubby is off to work until lunch about the same time, so it's perfect for getting a few lyrics or song ideas in, sometimes using the drum cadences as inspiration. I make more money at my job working swing shift, so mornings actually work better into my schedule. Sometimes making a little chart of what happens around your home at various times of day can be really helpful in letting you determine what your best possible quiet or noisy time could be.

So don't let life's little aggravations keep you from songwriting. With a little effort during musical downtimes, you should be able to carve out time niches where you can write and write effectively. Getting plenty of rest, exercise and healthy food help to lower frustrations as well, all of which may seem to get in the way of writing, but can actually help your writing in the long run. So take care of yourself and your workspace, and you may find you are writing better and more material than before.

Most importantly, though-just keep writing, and have fun!
