You Are Already A StarPRACTICE IN FRONT OF PEOPLE Sure, many people are afraid their songs will get "stolen," but it is more likely that your songs will be ignored if no one hears them. If you at least goof off with friends on your apartment porch quietly, you will suddenly find you have fans. If you play your songs on your tape player softly at your desk at work if that is allowed, instead of the local stuff, you may find you suddenly have met someone who can get your stuff on local radio. If you play open mics, even acoustic without your band, and just accompanying someone else, you may be given a chance to play with other bands and make that needed step up to the pros you never would have gotten had you not stuck your neck out. Put your albums or demos out on your table at the local flea market or your garage sale if you can do that, and you may well sell a few copies and have some new people showing up at your latest gig. See if they can pipe your songs over the loudspeakers at the local airport (ours does that with local musicians, and they don't have to even have a band), or the local songwriter's station-many offer a daily demo program. The important thing is that you get music to the masses in any way possible, even if you just whistle your own tune softly on the bus on the way to work. You never know who might be listening. So be brave, and act like the songwriter you want to be. Dare to send your stuff to that song tip sheet when a good ad appears, whether you like that song or not, and send people to your site. You never know if they will ask for something else along the same lines, and at least get that all-important nibble. If you just sit around writing, and just say "someday," though, someday may never get here. So just get out there, keep writing, and have fun! ©2004 Cindy Lee Haddock
