More Fun With Love SongsLIFE CAN SUCK-LET US KNOW HOW BADLY Hey, if you had a horrible time, don't gloss it over. Some of the most entertaining songs of late have been about dates with unusual endings, and we've all had some of those. If your time together was a complete comedy of errors, don't try to put a good spin on it-you might even try making it a flashback or flash-forward to another time and have the two of you laughing or wishing for such silliness again in your too-serious lives. If you enjoyed it even if it was a tragedy, tell us that, too-some of us would rather take a great concert together in the rain over a jerk that walked out halfway through an overpriced show any day. If it really sucked, that can be a classic-think of all the hits where the date ended in someone dying, or the victim walking out proudly after their date acted badly. Say it the way you want to say it, and don't hold back-sometimes the best-written lyrics are those with the most passion behind them, so give us your best punch. So don't try to just write the next bit of love song pabulum. Pabulum doesn't get signed, as a rule. Songs that say a thing in an honest way that touches people often do get album cuts, though, so give that a try. You will have spent probably far less time than you would trying to be clever and coming off sounding phony to the point that you did a dozen rewrites to fix the problem, and it will sound like something a real person might say...gee, what a concept! Trust me, gals and guys both seem to prefer honesty to slick lines, any day. Say what you really feel, and enjoy yourself doing it. Most of all, though, just keep writing, and have fun! ©2004 Cindy Lee Haddock
