MORE FUN WITH LOVE SONGS
In response to last week's discussion, I thought I'd touch on this subject, again. Sure, writing love songs can be tough, especially since it seems that everything has already been said. Here are a few more different approaches you might not have tried yet. BEND THE RULES UNTIL THEY BREAK Don't feel that you have to use perfect rhymes all the time, and don't forget many hits didn't use perfect ABABCAB form, either. If it really does sound more natural to you to use a near-rhyme or a regional pronunciation, by all means, put it in there. The same goes with using an extra measure here or there if it helps the song "breathe" and sound more fluid to you. Sure, doing this might get your song passed over by diehards in the industry, but it also might be the thing that makes it stand out amongst the more cookie cutter competition you might be up against. SAY WHAT YOU REALLY FEEL If a line sounds stupid to you, trust your instincts. What do you REALLY want to say to that person? Don't forget that the more personal something is, the more universal that feeling probably is, so there are plenty of people that probably will totally agree with your assessment of the situation, or how you choose to express your feelings about something or someone. Sure, saying things in today's language may be passé in a few years, but it isn't now, and if that is what you feel, you might point out how the couple can laugh about how stupid they sounded a few years into the relationship. If you can't get it to rhyme, you might write it that way, too, and say that you can't get it to rhyme, and why. Honesty is a big turn-on in most relationships, and many of the best love songs have been really open ones. Be brave, and remember it probably won't be you having to sing it, anyway, so climb out to the end of that branch and get the good fruit. DETAILS, DETAILS! So just how sick did saying that dumb comment make you feel? What state were your nerves in just then? What color was the stain on her jeans after she spilled some of her dinner on her lap? What song was playing, and just how tired are you of hearing that song? Which date was this? Were you comparing it to some other time-what happened then and how did that prepare or ruin you for this event? Let us know all the tabloid details, and give us a front row seat for this three-minute movie. We need to feel like we are there so we can empathize with the principal players. The more senses you involve, and the more detailed your vision, the more chances you give others to get into the conspiracy with you. Go To Page: 1 2
