William Grant Still died of heart failure on December 3, 1978, in Los Angeles. The impact of his career goes far beyond the fact that he was a great composer who has such diverse influences as W.C. Handy and Edgard Varese. His impact reaches into the very heart and soul of what America is supposed to be about. His pioneering work opened the doors for many other composers and non-composers alike, and it is this legacy, along with his vast body of music, that makes him an American legend.
