Music Technology

at my own expense.)

To make a MIDI file: Set computer to your fav. MIDI program, hit the record button, play desired music on the keyboard, hit stop, playback, switch to track 2, record again with another instrument sound of your choice, keep doing this until all instruments or parts are recorded, edit to taste. Serves 20 to 30 students. :-)

With an answer like this, one might think, "what else is there to know?" Read on, my friend.

For what I call my MIDI teaching station, I have a Mac MIDIed to a Clavinova and a Yamaha GM sound module. The line out from the sound module is Y-ed with my CD player into my sound system with speakers mounted on ceiling. There is a 26-inch monitor overhead with the Mac screen showing, the computer keyboard is right out in front so I can bring up new files and start/stop with a few hits of the key.

External synthesizers or sound modules, in my experience, have a much better sound and instrument quality. It can make the difference between sounding like a toy or a real instrument.

I told Andrew I had a Yamaha keyboard at school but didn't know if it was midi capable. Here is what he said:

It may say MIDI capable on it somewhere, or look on the back for two large round ports with five pin-holes, set in a semi-circle labled "MIDI in" and "MIDI out." Some older or inexpensive keyboards will not have these.

In closing, Andrew states:

I have found that the ease of using "Musicshop," along with the instant gratification of being able to playback, makes it an ideal program for my students and for music teachers trying to "get into" MIDI. Several other teachers in my district are using it in varying degrees in their classrooms. None of them use it to the extent that I do, so I am still viewed as some kind of kook or techno-geek. But, in the words of "that sailor": "I yam what I yam!"
