More Music Software Heaven Part Two

It's that time of year when even my best attempts at keeping thoughts of school at bay, I still find myself thinking, what can I do to really start the school year off with something different and fun, yet educational. Teachers, get ready for this! There are some products available now that will ease our load, "wow" the students and impress the principal. And you can actually have fun learning through technology!

The Midi Archives has a page that offers music teachers and music lovers, for that matter, some great finds in software. I breezed over to "The Noteworthy Software" site and was impressed with the things they say their software is capable of. How about some software that will do your notation for you as you create your "masterpiece"? Not bad, eh? There are other software selections such as "Cakewalk" and "Crescendo" midi player, too.

At Musicware, Inc., PC and MAC users alike are provided for! The software that you will find here will help you learn sight-reading, rhythm, ear-training and music theory. Plus, the "Nightingale" for MAC users will scan your notation for you into your computer. "Music Lab", a comprehensive music curriculum that teaches sight-reading, rhythm, singing, and music transcription is also available.

ScreenDance, truly brings music to life! What this software does may not serve any "real" educational experience regarding our core concepts but wow, what fun!

Here's an example of what the Aurora animation looks like:
Of course, for the image to be animated, you would need to view it with the software. If you would like to see more screen shots from this fantastically fun software, click here.

"Aurora is reminiscent of dancing Northern Lights. This animation functions much like a color organ. Beautiful bands of color light up to the different frequencies in the music. Bass notes produce fuzzy blobs in the center, while higher notes result in bright rings with correspondingly higher diameters."

The other animations created by music, are fractals, piano roll, neon lights and lots more! This could be wonderful software to use in developing creativity before that activity of representing music through art.

Dave Young, from the ScreenDance site, sent me this note.

"We are currently working on a Windows 95 version of ScreenDance which will be more user friendly, can run in a resizable window, and can operate as a screen saver.

If you have any thoughts or ideas for features you'd like to see in the next version of ScreenDance, please let me know. We'd love to hear from music educators like yourself. Although ScreenDance was primarily created for entertainment, I think it is educational in the sense that it lets the user "see" pitch (3D spectrograph, aurora, piano roll) and rythm (dancer, kaleidoscope) while listening to any music they like, even their own voices singing into the microphone. We have even had advanced vocalists use the 3D spectrograph for voice training."
