Conductors, Etc.

© Deborah Jeter

This week's article started out just covering various conductors, conducting skills and techniques. But as I explored online, a myriad of offspring developed and the next thing you know, I was completely off into something different. I'm glad that it happened that way because this hodge podge list of links is full of interesting musician biographies, music lessons/games by Wynton Marsalis, conducting resources and information on the Kronos Quartet.

  • Andrew Levin's Own Conductor's Home Page
  • You'll find a lot of good music info here. There are sections on conducting, rehearsal techniques, comparison tables on various styles and periods of music and more.

  • The Compleat Conductor
  • This book is a highly provocative critique of modern conducting, sure to spark debate in the music world.

  • A Musician's Guide to Orchestra Conductors
  • This is purely in fun.

  • The Wynton Marsalis Music Page
  • Want to test your music knowledge? Try these exercises written by Wynton Marsalis.

  • The NetStation is affiliated with the PBS site. Lots of great performance information at these two sites.
  • YoYo Ma - Cellist and Conductor. YoYo Ma is one of the most sought-after cellists of our time.
  • Cecilia Bartoli - A brilliant mezzo-soprano who is merely 25 years of age but sings with the intelligence and emotion of someone way beyond her years. At another site for Cecilia, you'll find a biography, news on her concerts, a discography and information for her fans. And she is very beautiful too.
  • New Musical Notation
  • Take a look at the notation for slapping, smacking, breathiness and cracked sounds just to name a few.

  • Sony's Artist info: An extensive list with biography, discography and more!
  • Classics World Composers - This is an exceptional search engine.
  • You can search by Musical Periods: Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Twentieth Century, and Contemporary.

  • Kronos Quartet
  • "Since its inception in 1973, the Kronos Quartet has emerged as leading voice for New York." If you haven't heard this group play, then be sure to give them a listen.

  • Music: Collection
  • A great search engine for music from sources related to 18th- and 19th-century American church music, American sheet music, an archive devoted to Glenn Miller, and a number of other special collections.

All I can say about the next site's coverage on conductors is WOW! You'll find a hefty list of conductors offered here by Washington University. Someone has definitely done their home, er Net-work!

This should keep you busy for a while. I know it did me. See ya next week.
