TOOLS OF PRESERVATION by Mary HaegeleOil paintings - never leave them (or anything else you want to preserve) in direct sunlight. The paint will dry and crack eventually. There are many good books on how to safeguard a valuable item that is aging. Some more do not's Do not use sticky tape on your item. It will yellow and if you remove it from the item, your will forever see where it has been. Do not remove stamps from envelopes or postcards. Do not wash old clothes, quilts, doilies etc. Do not dry clean them either. Use the method recommended above. Do not clean old coins. Do not "touch up the paint" on items. Do not write on the back of photographs. Do not eat or smoke when working with artifacts. THe preservation of items, either artifacts or home items is a large and sometimes complex field. We have touched only briefly on it here.
