The Stage Curtain Project
This is a textile postcard measuring 1.5m x 2.5m, designed for a Brisbane City Council project. It was made with women at the Migrant Resource Centre, depicting a typical shop in West End.
Those textile postcards came about when some BCC arts officers came to see the progress of the Stage Curtain. They were planning an exhibition called "Postcards of Brisbane" in the old Arts Building in Ann Street and asked me to come up with a local design. "I thought the fruit shop next to the MRC truly represented West End and when that textile was completed with the help of some of the women who had worked on the curtain, I went on to make the Queensland house alone at home in my studio." Have a look at another postcard, a typical tropical house in Queensland. Old Queenslanders stood on tall stumps because of the tropical rains. I think that the Old Queenslander is a very beautiful applique and a fitting finale for the project. I had hoped to show the reader much more about West End throughout the course of this article. Information and photos are for the moment sadly lacking. However I will revisit West End at a later stage and bestow on it the respect it so deserves as one of the hubs of multi-cultural creativity in Brisbane. Again I would like to thank Kez for allowing and assisting me to write this article. If you would like to read about the next project she co-ordinated please subscribe and click yes when asked if you wish to be notified when it is published. Australia Council For The Arts The Australia Council's primary responsibility is to help create an environment which encourages the creativity and development of Australian artists, and which provides greater access to arts and cultural activities for all Australians.
