A Whole Lot More Talented Than me!

Peter Rabbit
When you were a kid did you used to do the puzzles in the weekly mags which read

Pick What's Wrong With This Picture???

There would be some little thing wrong like a missing foot or an out of place character.

So......can you pick what's wrong with this picture?

Neither can I.

A critique about this mural would say

"Clever composition which leads the eye to a vanishing point in a meandering manner. The door frame is used as a visual device which causes the viewer to enter a world of fantasy." Peter Rabbit painted by Judith Moore.

But then don't you just hate the way some academics go on? Do you find it irritating when teachers et al over analyse all kinds of artworks? Not that we don't want to read articles about art, mind you! Discipline Based Art Education is essential to the development of a sense of aesthetics and creative discipline for art students world wide.

But sometimes.....and just maybe.. this can at times take away the experience of pleasure when a naive viewer would like to spontaneously appreciate artwork.

When Judith Moore gave me permission to use her images for this article she said....

"I've only done a couple of murals and only do it for fun. I'm not actively pursuing a career from it, kind of only do it for family and friends. Plus there's a lot of mural artists out there who are a whole lot more talented than me!"

Either Judith has had some formal training or she is very talented and good at self tuition. Quite frankly I haven't seen a more genuinely pleasing and talented offering.

Now. I do know that any artist actively pursuing an art career has to be business like, sensitive to the needs of his/her audience and willing to promote, promote, promote!! She may need to facilitate interpersonal conflict and creative tension. On the other hand if painting murals is your passion; if you value the experience for just what it is...an artistic experience, then for you muraling may be a whole different ball game.

It isn't that professional artists never have fun, mind you. On the contrary. Fancy getting paid to do what you love! Not every body is fortunate enough to have that privilege bestowed upon them. But there may well be creative tension when an artist is forced to please too many people too much of the time.
