MS Site Reviews

word and help the site grow and live up to its potential.

Site: MS ActiveSource

Motto: "For All People With MS"

Philosophy: MSActiveSource.com is a new, unbranded, and personalized website for people living with multiple sclerosis (MS), their care partners, and health care professionals. Biogen--the biotechnology company that makes AVONEX®--created this website as part of its dedication to the treatment and research of MS.

Strengths: There are many, not the least of which is its personalized structure. I particularly love the one-click ability to increase the font size-a major boon to those of us with vision problems.

Interesting features of this new site include:

  • The MS Learning System-- a series of highly scientific, educational modules that allow people interested in MS to learn about the condition at their own pace, on their own time.
  • MS Experience Exchange-- a community forum for sharing experiences amongst people touched by MS who are facing similar challenges.
  • MS News-- late breaking news, updated daily, that pulls from a database of over 3,000 publications.
  • Ask an Expert-- an opportunity for visitors to submit questions to leading MS specialists.
  • Living with MS-- helpful tips regarding day-to-day life written by people with MS, for people with MS.
  • MS Event Finder-- enter your state and find out where MS-related events are happening locally.

Caveats: The "My Calendar" feature allows you to conveniently keep track of physician appointments, injection times, diet requirements, and exercise routines. Users can record and access their personal thoughts for each day in a notes section. This sounds like a helpful function, however, be sure to find out what security measures are in place to protect such personal information. Also be sure that you read and fully understand the disclaimer and privacy policy before signing up. You are asked a couple of questions about your therapy and relapse history during the registration process. Keep in mind that many people are perfectly comfortable providing that information, while others are not.

Overall Impressions: I really enjoyed my visit to this site. On one hand, I didn't have much luck finding out information about specific therapies using the search function: "Found 0 Results for "betaseron": Found 0 Results for "copaxone": Found 2 Results for "avonex". However, there are so many other sites that provide specific drug information if I need it, that I wasn't bothered too much. This site is extremely well constructed, and it offers many
