3. Who are some of the contributors that readers will meet in the book? "If you picked a handful of people in the world who have Multiple Sclerosis, what would you have in your hand? You'd have a parent, an athlete, maybe a painter or a pilot, perhaps several others who no longer define themselves by their career. You'd have more women than men, more thirty-year-olds than fifteen- year- olds. I wanted this handful of people to represent the book. I wanted this book to reveal the true face of multiple sclerosis. "So often in this world we are judged by what we do. What have you done? What do you do for a living? I felt if the book showcased only those people with MS that were capable of accomplishing big things, that would be missing the point. Not everyone with MS can run a marathon for charity, start a nonprofit organization, travel with a band. But all of the contributors in the book fall under my definition of a hero. They live from the inside out. They've found what's important to them; they've taken a journey of the soul. In the process they've grown wise, and the yardstick they use to measure their worth has nothing to do with their paychecks or stock options or laps at the gym." Richard Palmer was a trial lawyer living in the Midwest. Richard experienced cognitive problems associated with his first attack of MS and was not able to function any longer in a court room. He was not able to read, remember important data, or think clearly. Richard's chapter discusses the importance of coming to terms with illness and striving to understand what it is important to us in life.
