Educators' studies involving using media and multimedia

Does using multimedia help in education? This is a subject of huge debates despite many studies made over the past decade. In this article, we will point out where you can go to get some of the results and even access to the final reports of the studies.

First, we need to clarify a few terms here. You can use multimedia in a pre-canned title or pre-canned content or you can teach with multimedia where you have your students actually create in multimedia in the constructivist style of teaching. It is important to be aware of this distinction.

Dr. Thomas C. Reeves of the University of Georgia clearly makes the above distinction and writes about study results in his paper on the Impact of Media and Technology in Schools.

Dr. Robert S. Houghton, College of Education and Allied Professions, Western Carolina University writes about how multimedia enables the concept of linking information that is critical to this information age in his paper on Rationale for Multimedia Use and Instruction in Education http://www.ceap.wcu.edu/HOughton/MM/Rati...

Sue Cunningham University of Manchester talks about the DIME Project in her paper, http://www.dime.org.uk/downloads/mulit.t... This paper includes a literature review of studies looking at studies that report on effectiveness of multimedia in industry and education.

The site, http://cuda.teleeducation.nb.ca/nosignif... provides links to a couple of hundred reports showing study results that show, no significant difference in using multimedia.

The site http://cuda.teleeducation.nb.ca/signific... that is more recent points out studies that show a significant difference.

In all cases, it is important to read through these studies, to understand their set-up, and to understand all of their conclusions and not just pick off a few words here and there.
