Industry Multimedia Research Web sitesSome great sites that are conducting research in topics relating to multimedia Every once in a while, it is worth checking out what researchers are researching in the industry sponsored laboratories in the areas of multimedia. Several companies are conducting research in this area especially as it relates to putting multimedia on the Internet. These companies often describe some of their research activities on their Web sites. Not only are these interesting sites, but often these sites provide an opportunity for viewers to download new software to test out. The first site that we want to direct your attention to is that of IBM's research division: http://www.research.ibm.com/home.html Select innovative interfaces, multimedia, and then hot video. You can download Hotvideo tools from IBM's alpha works site. Speech is another area that you will find very interesting. From this main research site you will be directed to IBM's speech technology site. If you continue to drill down into this research site, you will stumble across Hotmedia. Actually, here is the Web site to get to it directly, http://www-4.ibm.com/software/net.media/ . With Hotmedia you can create animations with hot spots in them. This application can be downloaded. Here is what IBM says about Hotmedia. "With HotMedia you can add special effects, such as streaming audio, 360 degree views, animations, panning and scrolling, and zoomable multi-resolution images. Add interactions and hot links, and assemble the entire experience into one file, easily added to a web page and delivered over today's networks. Hotmedia dynamically determines the minimal code and data content which is needed and downloads it progressively." Not to be outdone, the venerable ATT has its research site, http://www.att.com/technology/attlabs/br... where you can read about ATT's research in multimedia distributed networks. Intel's site is http://developer.intel.com/IAL/labs/acl.... . Intel's work on mobile technologies for the future make exciting reading. Lucent, once part of ATT, inherited Bell Labs in the split up. One part of Bell Labs is dedicated to multimedia communications, http://www.bell-labs.com/org/1133/index.... Some of their most recent work involves transmission of digital video. http://www.lucent.com/ldv/
