Your current best tool for recording audio and video is Windows Media Encoder 9 or the latest! It is better than Accessories\Entertainment\Sound Recorder and it comes from Microsoft. Best yet, is this tool is free or at least free if you have Microsoft Windows XP or similar.

Download it from www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/9series/encoder/default.aspx

Here is a step by step:

    • Bring it up from Launch tray's icon (circle and dot)
    • Capture audio or video
    • Check Audio (and/or Video, if desired)
    • Use Default device (Configure and Pin give a wide selection of sources. The most general one is Mixer.)
    • Next
    • Browse (select a desired destination folder, not default)
    • Type filename at the end of the selected folder name.
    • Next
    • File archive (for most flexibility; or use Windows Media Hardware Profiles)
    • Next
    • Medium Quality Audio (suffices for most purposes)
    • Next
    • Optionally type some Display information
    • Next
    • Un-check Begin capturing when I click finish
    • Finish
    • Next
    • Check what you have specified
    (Alternatively, Properties lets you do all of the above as needed.)
    • Click Start encoding, talk or play music, click Stop
    • Play output file
    • Close or New session to do another

    • Video streaming, using Microsoft Windows Media Encoder 9 Series
    • Bring WME9 up from Launch tray's icon (circle and dot) or where ever you have it.
    • Capture audio or video
    • Check both Audio and Video
    • Use Default device for both audio and video. It finds the Intel Deluxe PC Cam on our computer. Configure and Pin give a wide selection of audio sources. The most general is Mixer.)
    • Next
    • Browse (select a desired destination folder, not default)
    • Type filename at the end of the selected folder name.
    • Next
    • Windows media server (streaming)
    • Next
    • Select appropriate quality (data rate):
      o DVD Quality, really outstanding on full screen
      o Low bandwidth video, marginal postage-stamp size
    • Next
    • Check a data rate corresponding to the above selection
      o DVD Quality: 2.137 Mbps, about half of DVD rate
      o Low bandwidth video: 126 Kbps, for any broadband
    • Next
    • Optionally type some Display information
    • Next
    • Un-check Begin capturing when I click finish
    • Finish
    • Next
    • Check what you have specified
    (Alternatively, Properties lets you do all of the above as needed.)
    • Click Start encoding, talk, click Stop
    • Play output file (first video tests showed only first frame; then OK)
    • Close or New session to do another
