Video stories

As one of the first assignments in our undergraduate multimedia class we provide the students with several short video clips of different formats and ask them to use Microsoft's Moviemaker or Producer or Apple's iMovie to construct a fictional story taking no more than 3 minutes. In order to encourage them to become acquainted with compression, we further require the story to be e-mailed to us. We have several objectives for the students from unleashing their creativity to having them start gaining experience with multimedia tools and their peculiarities.

We want to share with you some of the triumphs and challenges that the students face.

The first major challenge is finding a computer with the requisite software. Since these students are seniors, many are using computers purchased when they were freshmen. They do not have the latest software or operating systems. This project provides an incentive to upgrade software as the software above comes with current versions of Microsoft and Apple's operating system. While we do not insist students buy new computers, many decide now is the time. If they decide they cannot run these programs, there are suitable computers around campus for students to use.

For those with late model computers there are other challenges. Microsoft no longer ships a full range of commonly used video codecs. In particular, popular Indeo and DivX must be downloaded and possibly paid for. Many of these newer computers ship with some versions of WinDVD for playing DVDs. Unfortunately some of these versions have a conflict with some versions of Windows Moviemaker. Students will need to go into the WinDVD program directory where they should see the two files iviaudio.ax and ivivideo.ax and rename them. Then Moviemaker's audio will work correctly. Afterwards, they can come back and rename these files back to their original name.

Here are some of our comments on the students' three minute stories:

Excellent, not to mention hysterical. You set up the "beginning" of the story as an ordinary, nice day, beautifully and then cut to what saw as terribly ominous militarization of a beach. You revealed the character's problem, a good "middle" of the story and wasted no time in showing the result, the "end" of the story all the more powerfully for being so short. If the title has a great explanation, please provide it in an email, because we missed it.

This submission did not meet requirements. Instead of a video file that we could play, you sent us a MSWMM file suitable for editing your project. We might have been able to supply the video, if our CD drive had happened to be D:, but we saw no voiceover narration file that would have made the attempt worthwhile. Let's at least discuss what to do next time after which we will give you a "yes" for effort.
