Proactively Managing MS by joining NARCOMS

There are two words that we, as MS patients, should know. PROACTIVE and REACTIVE. Most of us know the difference, but do we manage MS proactivelyly, or do we maintain our MS treatment(s) reactively?

First, no matter when you were diagnosed, in the 'proactive' mode, we read, research, ask questions about the most appropriate medical care in our MS world. We choose our physician, we question our diagnostic results. We ask our medical professionals for their advice, treatment and care. MS symptoms are shared in a myriad of conditions. Proper diagnosis is key and it is up to the patient to disseminate the lab tests, medical advise and treatment in a manner that works for both the patient and the medical professional.

I am particularly pleased with the MS treatment center my physician joined. Before the MS treatment center, the insurance company dictated that the physician spend no more than seven minutes per patient. This is inadequate and frankly absurd to believe that quality care can be provided in seven minutes, yet most insurance companies have unrealistic "guidelines" that many professionals must follow.

MS is not a simple disease to treat unless the physician has the latitude of ordering specific tests, listening to answers. Your doctor is a vital connection between you and your test results. Unfortunately, your time with your MS specialist is limited, thus decisions must be made quickly.

Once diagnosed, choices are presented and treatment (*usually an immune therapy) must begin as soon as possible. There are other additional therapies to help with present symptoms to curb pain, cognitive ability, depression, mobility, spasticity among other physical problems, which should all be considered.

NARCOMS--WHAT IS IT?

One proactive action is to report our progress in this disease by joining in the NARCOMS studies only a few times a year. NARCOMS (North American Research Committee on Multiple Sclerosis) has over 30,000 patients enrolled in this study.

Participation in this study plays an important role in the success of the Registry. By enrolling and completing the questionnaire, patients may be monitored and will be notified if studies and clinical trials can only be to your particular circumstances.

NARCOMS makes everything so accommodating. The questionnaire can be answered by hardcopy, then mailed in to the organization or the questionnaire may be done online.

Please consider NARCOMS a proactive move towards the riddance of this disease. Registration is free and there are so many reasons to participate.
