MEMORIAL DAY BEGINS OUR SUMMER FUN
MS is a chronic illness that we'd all like to NOT have. The illness doesn't affect the patient, exclusively. The issues MS brings with it touch all families, friends, neighbors and co-workers. As Memorial Day announces that summer fun has begun, MS patients need to heed the obstacles that summer 'fun' can cost you. As MS individuals, we have many choices in: where, when, how and how much we naturally want inclusion in specific social events. We have family picnics, outside sports, boating, camping and a vast amount of tradition that most of us want inclusion, but first, we must consider our choices wisely. LEARN YOUR LIMITS You know what challenges you most Is it exercising? Is it an MS challenge: vision-impairment? Is your 'limit' unpredictable is fatigue an issue? Best time of day? Morning, afternoon, evening? LEARN TO 'POLITELY' SAY NO It is unfortunate, but true, that many folks are not aware of MS challenges and can often, even make the patient feel guilt when 'no' is your only answer in attending a social activity. Some folks, who just don't understand, say that 'if I'd just try', maybe I can attend an activity. MS challenges are so frustrating because the debilitation is real, although many might not see it or even believe it. The MS patient is often reluctant to explain for fear of leaving an impression that the challenge is real, you are frankly too sick to take time to explain. OFFER ALTERNATIVE ACTIVITIES THAT YOU MIGHT BE BETTER ABLE TO HANDLE Suggest a movie in an air-conditioned theater a shopping excursion at a mall that provides wheelchairs. This aids you in shopping in air-conditioning with the promise of a shared lunch afterwards. PUT YOURSELF AND YOUR LIMITS FIRST!! You have to be firm, especially when folks just won't accept 'no' for an answer. REMEMBER!!! - WATER IS YOUR FRIEND It keeps you hydrated when you drink it. It provides you with cooling when misting/fountains are available. It provides you with a cooling exercising while visiting a river, lake or stream Take heed during heat and drought-prone times. Knowing your limits will be key for a healthier you. Funny, though, by the time you think you've got a handle on the heat...HERE COMES LABOR DAY. AND SO, ANOTHER SEASON BEGINS. Live your life to the fullest your body can handle and most of all, smile and look forward to each day as it comes. Go To Page: 1 2
