The popular online music site MP3.com announces country specific websites in Europe for France, Spain, German and the United Kingdom. Its part of Vivendi Universal expansion to provide country specific, local music content.
The European sites will be without some of the technologies from that of its US site, which got the company into legal battles. My.MP3.com and Beam-It services will not be included in the European sites, which allow users to virtually store music they have purchased into an online locker, until International licenses are negotiated. This is achieved by a database of 80,000 CDs copied by MP3.com and then transferred into a user’s locker after they have proven their purchase. But the Major record labels sued Mp3.com for creating this database, eventually MP3.com obtained the license from Warner, BMG and EMI and only available for use in the US. MP3.com will have to negotiate International licenses to allow of these services to be included in the European sites. MP3.com in Europe will have to compete with several similar European sites. “Even before its official lunch on the continent, MP3.com is the seventh-ranked entertainment site in Europe.” (By Michael Learmonth, MP3.com Europe won’t include signature service). But MP3.com has boasted 6 Million European users have already registered with its US counterpart site. The European sites will be translated and massaged to feature popular local artists and culturally relevant music genres. The move to Europe is part of an expansion plan by MP3.com’s parent company Vivendi Universal. Vivendi Universal is a French media group, which purchased MP3.com for $345 million to be a dominant force in the online music market. Vivendi Universal Net’s CEO, said in the statement that the company aims to become the “ leading online music content and service provider in Europe.” MP3.com has appointed WebtraffIQ (http://www.webtraffiq.com) to manage its web stats across all of its European websites. With a 12-month contract WebtraffIQ will monitor, track and analyse consumer and business data, enabling MP3.com Europe and its business partners to provide a more focused services. MP3.com commissioned WebtraffiQ after working for 2 months on MP3.com UK.
