On September 24, 2002 Microsoft released its new beta version of its Media Player called Windows Media Player 9 Series. The new player is geared for Windows XP Home Edition or Windows XP Professional (some features require these operating systems) but versions for Windows 98 SE, 2000 and Windows Millennium Edition are available.

The player has gone through varies amounts of changes compared to its previous version Windows Media Player 7x. New buttons and some of the old buttons have been re arranged along with a new feature called Services have been added into the 9 Series player.

As you can see from the above images buttons have been re arranged and some buttons have been removed. One of the new buttons added into the 9 series player is the Autohide menu bar (located at the top left corner under the File menu) button, which allows you to hide the menu bar on the top of the player. The three buttons (Show Equalizer & Settings in Now Playing, Show playlist Now playing and Shuffle) on the top by the side of the drop down box from Windows Media Player 7x have been removed from the 9series player. The Shuffle button has been moved to the bottom near the Volume control button.

The new feature added to the player is the Services function. This is a premium for music and movie services. Designed to give you the freedom of choice when selecting premium content, these subscription services deliver a seamless experience, from sign-in, to download, to your media library.

Some of the old features have been improved on such as the Copy to CD function. The Copy to CD (uses Roxio CD Burning plug-in) function has been combined with the Copy to Device function. These functions are made easy and user friendly with less steps to achieve your goals. The Copy to Device does not support parallel or serial, other interfaces, such as Universal Serial Bus (USB) and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 1394 (such as Apple FireWire or Sony i.LINK) are supported.

Windows Media Player 9 Series can detect DVD, CD, or digital media file you are playing and display information (metadata) about it, such as the DVD name, the names of the DVD titles and chapters, the CD name, the artist name, or the song name.
