personal use
This is the Audio Home Recording Act (AHRA) of 1992, which allows users of digital audio devices to make copies of copyrighted works on other media for personal use.

playlist
Playlist contains the names of audio files. Playlist are used to organise a group of tracks that you want to treat as single units.

plug-in
An add-in component to provide extra features to software applications.

pressed CD
A pre-recorded audio or data CD, as opposed to a recordable CD.
pulse code modulation
A standard format for uncompressed audio used for data stored on audio CDs. Abbreviated to PCM.

Q Design
Q Design is a digital audio format created by Qdesign Corporation.
Quick Time
Best known for its video format and can also be used for audio-only files too.

RealAudio
A digital-audio format created by RealNetwroks and bet known for its wide used for streaming audio.

RF modulator
RF stands for Radio Frequency is a device may be able to use to patch a portable MP3 player into your car stereo.
RIAA
Abbreviated for the Recording Industry Association of America. The trade association that presents the interest of record companies and the artist signed to them.
Rio
A series of portable MP3 players developed by Diamond Multimedia.

ripper
Program that extracts the audio data from a CD.

ripper/player/jukebox
An application with the combination a ripper, and encoder, a player, and jukebox capabilities.

sampling
The process of examining the patterns of a sound to determine its characteristics and to record it from an analog format into a digital format. Sampling creates a pattern of data points for the audio that are saved to a digital file. The more data points there are, the closer the audio sounds to its original.

sampling precision
Sampling precision is the amount of information about the individual sample that is saved to the audio. 16bits (2bytes) per second sampling precision are used in CDs. To encode MP3 files sampling precision is also used. Also known as sampling resolution.

sampling rate
The frequency with which sound is examined in sampling. Kilohertz (kHz) is used to measure sampling.

SDMI
The abbreviation for Secure Digital Music Initiative.

shotgun modem
Another term for dual mode.

SHOUTcast
A server used for streaming audio.

skin
A graphical look you can apply to an MP3 player.

sound pressure level
Speaker volume. Abbreviated to SPL.

SPL
Abbreviated for sound pressure level.

streaming audio
Its away of delivering audio over the Internet which playback occurs while the audio is being downloaded rather than after the download is complete.

subwoofer
A speaker designed to produce bass and very low frequency sound.

surround sound
