(Heavy sigh)
Well folks, the Emmy nominations for the 2000-2001 seasons have been announced and, yet again, I find myself beating my head against the wall in abject frustration. Is it just me, or do we need to kidnap all of the existing members of the Television Academy, take them out to a swamp, and leave them there? That way, a whole new group of people could come in and maybe, just maybe, nominate some truly deserving shows and actors. Let’s look at the travesties of this year:
John Lithgow in 3RD ROCK FROM THE SUN, a show so horrid it causes houseplants to die when they are left next to a TV set playing it’s reruns. Lithgow, who’s won twice in this category for this part, is the antithesis of funny on this program. His ham-handed overacting is, at it’s best, embarrassing and at it’s worst, completely unwatchable. How he has gotten recognition for this role is simply beyond me. And what’s worse, the best male comedy performance of the season is absent from the list, that being of course, Tom Cavenaugh on the aforementioned ED. This guy has got some serious comedy game and needs to be recognized for it. Throw Lithgow to the dogs, for all I care. There are others, of course, that piss me off, but to discuss all of them would take several articles and some major sedatives, so I think I’ll just skip down the list to the number one, biggest bonehead move the Academy made this year. Where the hell were the nominations for BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER? Non-fans are currently rolling their eyes but I’m here to tell you folks, this is THE best drama/comedy on TV right now. If you’ve seen it; actually sat down and watched an episode or two, you’d know how good this show is. It has a flawless cast, remarkable screenplays and direction that major Hollywood movies should be so lucky to have. At the very least, Sara Michelle Geller should have received a Best Actress nom, the supporting awards should have gone to Anthony Stewart Head and James Marsters and the show should have been nominated for Best Drama. It is a crime and a half that this show has once again been snubbed (although it did receive a writing nom last year) and it makes me absolutely crazy that it won’t be taking home the gold for the fine, exemplary season it just finished.
