PETER JACKSON: The Good and The Gore2. THE FRIGHTENERS (also 1996) Okay, so maybe “technically” this would fall into the Horror film category, but really, it’s much more than that. It’s a study of life, of love and of… well, ghosts. Specifically, what happens to ghosts when death comes back for another round. This little spook-a-thon stars none other than Michael J. Fox, going against type as a bit of a bad boy/ screw-up detective. He’s really funny in this, as are John Astin and the others that play Fox’s spectral pals. Be sure to pay attention to Jake Busey (son of Gary). His performance is truly scary and really made this picture a solid piece of work. 3. HEAVENLY CREATURES (1994) This is one of my all-time, hands-down, top-ten favorite movies of all time. In a word, it’s brilliant. In more words, it’s one of the most touching, slightly-creepy, off-kilter love stories ever made (And I’ve officially over used the hyphen). It stars Kate Winslet in her first role, and it concerns her character’s friendship with another school friend. They become so attached to each other that they develop their own internal fantasy world that slowly consumes their lives, leading to murder and assorted mayhem. And, it’s based on a true story, so it’s doubly cool. Just go rent this one. Don’t even think about it. Just go. Trust me, you’ll be thanking me later. All right, I believe that wraps up this week’s article. Stay tuned next week for part two, in which the three goriest films of Jackson’s career are covered. These movies are great and believe me, you’ll want to have not eaten before hand. Until next week. Later.
