I Am A Child Of The 80s

Finally, I invite you to send me your feedback on the movies discussed in the column. Hearing about 80s movies you liked (and even those you didn't like) will only make this topic more interesting and fun, which, like the movies, is what it's all about.

Here are some of my favorites to get the ball rolling: ·"Raiders of the Lost Ark" (1981) and "E.T., the Extra-Terrestrial" (1982) - these two movies started my devotion to all things Spielberg. "Raiders" remains a thrill a minute, even after all these years, and I still cry like a baby when E.T. says goodbye to Elliott at the end of the movie. Both these movies created lasting impressions in my mind and heart. ·"Dead Poet's Society" (1989) and "Somewhere In Time" (1980) - I admit it, I am schmaltzy. I love a good cry during a movie, and these two are Kleenex fests. ·"Heathers" (1989) - although Christian Slater impersonating Jack Nicholson gets a bit tiring, the black humor and zingy one-liners are great. ·"When Harry Met Sally" (1989) - classic Meg Ryan. ·"Say Anything" (1989) - I'm a Cameron Crowe devotee. He's a master at dialogue, and he captures moments in time perfectly with his use of music. ·"Highlander" (1986) - I sat for a while trying to figure out exactly why this movie is on my list of favorites, and all I can say is, it just is. The premise of the movie is riveting, even if the acting isn't. The Queen soundtrack also adds a lot to the movie. ·"This Is Spinal Tap" (1984) - Stonehenge. 'Nuff said.

And last but not least: ·"Sixteen Candles" (1984) - we couldn't get through a list of favorite 80s movies without at least one from John Hughes! This is the one that made all teenage girls want to be Molly Ringwald, including me.

Next time, we'll take a closer look at movies written and directed by John Hughes and discover how the underlying themes are still relevant today. Until then, keep watching (and reading)!
