When the wizards who put together the technology that made the movies a reality were doing their work it is doubtful they thought about or appreciated the full effects moving pictures would have on the world's perception of itself. The watching of larger than life characters, a statement that itself has to be appreciated for its implications of how we feel about the movies, does have an effect on creatures such as us who have hope as a basic need. Cars, fashion, wherever you look life has been effect by the lingering influence of film. The story is told that upon hearing from a child who had seen Star Wars several hundred times the late Alec Guinness to the kid he should go out and play in the sunshine. This wasn't the ranting of a mean spirited old man but someone who understood the power of image could take over a young life and not let go.
Our basic needs as human beings give us keys as to why the moves effect us so much. Our need for role models dominate much of not only our young life but our adulthood as well. In an age when relationships are often strained movies can fill in what we lack from other people to good or bad effect. Add to that the fact studies from the day when people were experimenting with sensory depravation tanks proved the human mind when devoid of outside stimulation will begin to hallucinate images and you understand that some deep, perhaps for the most part unconscious, need for image dominates our lives. After all we do dream. Do movies effect us? Of course they do. Do violent movies effect kids? Of course they do. In the early days of movies when genteel films were pushed on the public they were rejected in favor of more action oriented fair. Movies were blamed then for all of societies ills and people were right to believe movies effected change in people's thinking. However the fact the millions of people go to the movies and relatively few of them ever end up doing violent things show that the movies effect is not one that is detrimental to the health of society and may possibly be a positive one in that film can expose the ills of a society like nothing else. Short of that movies open up the imagination and help people think in ways they never had before. Of course movies are just plain fun and there is nothing wrong with that. Go To Page: 1 2
